XLR to 3.5mm question.

I want to connect an XLR mircophone to a 3.5mm socket on my camcorder. I know that I can spend ?200 on a Beachtek DXA-4S(www.beachtek.com/products/dxa4_2s.html). I have also seen an XLR to 6.35mm adaptor which I could probably connect to a 6.35mm to 3.5mm adaptor, all costing less than ?20 (assuming it works). Has anyone tried using this, and how does the sound quality compare to the Beachtek?

You can get a pack of cheap adapters in the US at Radio Shack or similiar (i'm assuming the UK has something akin to Radio Shack) That you could make work, but seeing how the impedence of the inputs is different, it would probably introduce some kind of audible hum to the soundtrack, which you wouldn't want at all.
If you're handy with a soldering iron, I've seen schematics for a crude version of that Beachteck Adapter you could peice together cheaply. WIsh I could have been of more help.
